Romans twelve, twenty-one

Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Did you catch that… the way to conquer evil. The way to win. It’s by doing good. We tend to think that the way to conquer evil is with more evil. Think of all the ways we employ violence to fight violence. In war, in disputes over fences with neighbors, in cutting off the guy in traffic who just (probably accidentally) cut you off.

Find a way to make something good happen. Let the person in a hurry cut in front of you in line at the supermarket. Love the person who’s not kind to you (they might change their behavior if you do). Love your child, your spouse, your father, your mother, your brother, your sister, your friend, even when it’s hard.

You’re not just “being nice”. You are conquering evil!

Lord, show us today some way we can do something truly good, something kind and generous and patient and loving, and help us to be part of your redemptive work on earth… doing good… and conquering evil. Amen.
